Do your feet hurt when you walk?

Walking is a very underrated physical activity nowadays. It is interesting to know how many scientific studies show that walking improves both your physical and mental health, and can even make you live longer. 

People usually forget about things they get used to. Everyday activities and actions quickly fade into the background of our lives and we do not become aware of them until something is wrong. Walking is one of those things. We do it all the time, even if we, as many people in cities and towns nowadays, spend most of our days sitting. Eventually, we stand up to go get something, or change places, or something else. Even if we, say, drive to our jobs, we need to walk all the way to the car to get inside it and then walk agan from the parking lot to our chairs upstairs. We walk every day for many purposes, and we are so used to doing so that we forget how important it is and how often we do it until something reminds us of it. In example, pain.

 

People who experience pain during walking suddenly become aware of how much they walk and how desperately they need to sometimes. Even if the cause of pain could not be severe, podiatrist agree, its impact in our lives is of great consideration. What is, then, a common cause of foot pain?

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis (also called fasciitis plantaris) is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, which are soft tissue fibers that are located under the skin of our soles. The purpose of these fibers is to support the foot arch in place and cushion the weight of our body on our feet. When they become damaged, little filaments fo these fibers start to tear and this causes pain.

Such pain is usually centered in one or both heels, because that is where all plantar fascia are connected. It is usually described by patients as throbbing pain, like stepping on a nail. The sensation is more intense after a long period of not standing on our feet, such as the morning right after we get out of bed. The pain usually eases a little after some walking.

What are the causes of plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fascia are damaged when they are put under too much stress. Like a bridge that starts cracking when there is too much weight put on it or when a lot of people jump on in very hard, heavy weight or hard impact on feet can deteriorate its structure. Some of the main causes of plantar fasciitis, thus, include: overweight, excessive time standing or carrying heavy load, improper striding, flat foot and running on hard surfaces without proper foot padding. 

Good news is that all causes of plantar fasciitis can be fixed. Health problems such as overweight and flat arch can be treated, and bad habits like improper running or standing can be rearranged. 

How to relieve pain caused by plantar fasciitis?

Luckily, plantar fasciitis very rarely requires major intervention. Plantar fascia can regenerate by themselves, of course as long as the causes of their tearing are removed. Controlling the causes is the key to relieving the pain, as described above. Usually, in a few months this condition is cured by itself. However, there are techniques to ease the pain in the meantime, as well as acelerate the process of healing.

Foot excersises that increase the strenght and flexibility of feet will help the foot structure support the body weight, and therefore it will not be damaged that easily. Performing such excersises daily will help to relieve foot pain.

Cold water is also good to relieve the inflammation. Be careful not to use water that is too cold from the beginning, or it could cause more pain than it relieves. The trick is to put your feet in cool water and then add ice regularly, allowing your body to accustom to the temperature. 

Other methods like shock-wave therapy and corticoids can be used in some cases.

A great measure to take is to use orthotic insoles, especially if they are custom made. They provide extra support for the foot arch as well as make it adopt a correct shape. Orthotic insoles are valorated amongst the most effective ways of relieving foot pain caused by plantar fasciitis, and international companies such as Footlogics have started to produce them for the general public. Remember to consult your doctor about your condition before deciding to engage in any of these methods of relief.
